on 14 July 2025 in WHAT'S HAPPENING IN EMERALD

If you’re staying at Maraboon Motor Inn in Emerald and looking for a truly unique Queensland experience, a day trip to the Sapphire Gemfields is a must. Located just under an hour’s drive west of Emerald, the Gemfields region is one of the largest sapphire-bearing areas in the world — and it’s right on your doorstep.

Whether you’re a seasoned fossicker, a family with kids, or simply curious about Australia’s gem-hunting heritage, there’s plenty to see, do, and discover.

What Are the Sapphire Gemfields?

Stretching across the small country towns of Sapphire, Rubyvale, Anakie, and Willows, the Gemfields are world-renowned for their rich deposits of sapphires, zircons, and other precious stones. This area has attracted miners, gem hunters, and tourists for over 100 years — and you can still try your luck today!

Things to Do in the Sapphire Gemfields

Try Your Hand at Fossicking

Grab a shovel, sieve, and bucket — and start digging! Several local operators offer fossicking parks where you can search pre-dug or natural gravel in search of your very own sparkling treasure. It’s a fun, hands-on experience for both kids and adults. No gear? No worries — everything you need is available on-site.

Recommended stops:

  • Miners Heritage, Rubyvale – Australia’s largest underground sapphire mine tour
  • Sapphire Gemfields Wetland Reserve – a peaceful spot to relax after fossicking
  • Pat’s Gems or Fascination Gems – for a guided experience

Visit Gem Shops and Galleries

Not into digging? Let the professionals do the work! Explore local gem shops and galleries where you’ll find a stunning selection of locally mined and cut sapphires, handmade jewellery, and rare gem collections. Some shops even let you custom-design your own piece.

Take a Mine Tour

Step underground and experience life as an old-time gem miner. Learn about the tools, tunnels, and techniques used to extract sapphires from the earth. Tours are available in Rubyvale and Anakie and offer a fascinating look into this colourful corner of Queensland’s outback.

How to Get There

The Sapphire Gemfields are located approximately 45–60 minutes west of Emerald by car. The drive is scenic and easy, making it a perfect half-day or full-day trip from your base at Maraboon Motor Inn.
